Once in Houston, we had an hour or two wait before our plane departed for San Jose, Costa Rica.
We arrived in San Jose, took our bags through customs, and then looked for our driver among the masses of taxis and drivers. Once finding our driver (he was waving my name around), we followed him to our personal transportation, a van. We set off for La Selva OTS, a couple hours to the NE of San Jose.
Arriving after dark, we didn't get much birding in this night. However, we did see a couple species that day from the airport:
Rock Pigeon
Great-tailed Grackle.
Wooo, big start. At the cabins at La Selva where we were dropped off, we heard a Common Pauraque (a kind of a nightjar) that night as well.
Our cabin was much nicer than what we were expecting. We had invisioned a leanto with maybe some bunkbeds. Instead we got our own 2 bed, 1 bath, half of a "house". I will say though, the lack of hot water made for a lively shower!! Brr.
Fell asleep to the sound of pauraques.
